(Bermuda).- The citizens of Bermuda will be given the opportunity to contribute to the island’s gambling policy following news that a public referendum on casino gaming will be held within the next three months.

Both of Bermuda’s political parties have arrived at a consensus on the positive contribution that casino gambling could have on Bermuda’s economy with Shawn Crockwell, minister of Tourism Development and Transport, describing it as a ‘game changer’ in the battle to attract inward investment and increased tourism.

“The people now seem ready to embrace it, recognizing that destinations that offer casino gaming are charging ahead of Bermuda in terms of luring investors and high tourism numbers, said Crockwell.

The vision being outlined is more Monte Carlo than Atlantic City with up market facilities and high end table games usurping slot machines. The casino proposition would be tailored to meet the leisure needs of tourists with a licensing system to control use by the resident population. So important is the issue that government officials are predicting a 70% turnout.
