(Macau).- The deputy director of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, Anthony Leong Man Ion, says casino operators that are not meeting all the air quality standards inside their smoking areas, should be obliged to go fully smoke-free.

Several casino worker groups say the air quality inside smoking areas is very bad, even worse than before the smoking ban was enacted. They have been calling for a full smoking ban. On January 1 this year, a partial smoking ban came into effect in casinos, which can now only have smoking areas covering up to 50 percent of their gaming floor.

The rules require casinos to ensure minimum air quality standards inside smoking areas and submit monthly reports to the Health Bureau. The rules also say the government can cancel a casino’s permit to have smoking areas if it doesn’t meet those standards.

“If it shows that all air quality doesn’t comply with the required standards, the best will be to fully ban smoking from casinos,” said Leong, quoted by public radio broadcaster Radio Macau.

Nonetheless, he says the government can offer some time for non-compliant casinos to improve their air quality standards inside smoking areas – “half a year, for instance,” Mr Leong suggested.
