(Greece).- The Greek government announced propose changes to its gaming tax regime, which will see OPAP players' winnings taxed progressively, the finance ministry said. The 10 % flat rate on all winnings announced in September will be scrapped, and replaced by a 15 % tax on winnings between 100 and 500 euros, with 20 % on anything higher. Winnings below 100 euros will go entirely tax free.

According to a legislative amendment to be submitted to parliament, the 10 % flat rate on all winnings which was announced last September as part of government efforts to plug its budget deficit will be scrapped, and replaced by a 15 % tax on winnings between 100 euros and 500 euros, with 20 % on anything higher. Winnings below 100 euros will go entirely tax free.

Analysts had criticized the flat-rate taxation, arguing it would discourage small-time players and hurt company sales and tax receipts.

The government said on Sunday it obtained European Union approval to scrap the flat tax rate. A 30 % levy on OPAP gross earnings, also announced in September, is not changing.
