Despite this year’s opening of Sands Cotai Central, hosting two casino venues, the proportion of visitors stating gambling as the primary purpose for them coming to Macau stood at 7.1 percent and 7.2 percent for the second and third quarters, respectively. That compares to the yearly average of 12.7 percent in 2010 and 8.2 percent for last year.
In particular, only 4.6 percent of first time visitors in the third quarter claimed to visit Macau for gambling. The large majority of visitors surveyed - close to one in every four - stated they were primarily coming here for pleasure or vacation purposes.
“These latest figures likely reflect a growing mix of visitors coming for leisure and recreational opportunities in Macau,” the researchers wrote. According to them, “it is quite possible that tourist diversification – seen in terms of the primary purpose of activity sought – is beginning to take hold.”
