It welcomed 70 global regulators in Buenos Aires

GLI organized its Latin American and Caribbean Regulators Roundtable 2012

(Argentina).- GLI welcomed 70 regulators from international jurisdictions to its recent Latin American and Caribbean Regulators Roundtable 2012. The event was staged November 12 at the Dorado Salon of the Marriott Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A total of 19 jurisdictions were represented from all across the region.

Speakers included a mix of key GLI staff and industry leaders and regulators from across the region and around the world.

GLI Director of Latin American and Caribbean Development Karen Sierra-Hughes said, “This was our most successful Latin American and Caribbean Roundtable to date. We are very grateful to the speakers who presented timely and incredibly relevant information and to the 70 regulators who attended. The Roundtable is an important part of our industry’s need to continually move forward, and we are proud to present it.”

Sierra-Hughes and GLI South America Director Francisco Javier Díaz opened the event, then the first panel was “Regulatory Control Actions In Phases: Field Verifications And Forensics Case Studies From The Lab And The Regulator Points Of View.” Appearing on the panel were Germán L. Vodopivec, Technical Coordinator of GLI South America and Renato Hamel Maturana, Superintendent, Superintendency of Casinos Chile.

The morning continued with “Money Laundering Controls In The Gaming And Lottery Industry” featuring panelists Mario Alfredo Prudkin Silva, Director, National Lottery, Argentina; Dr. Hernán E. Najenson, Advisor, Provincial Institute of Lotteries and Casinos of the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina; and German Clemente, Financial Information Unit, Argentina.

The morning ended with “A Roadmap For Starting iGaming (Internet Games, Mobile Technology, Among Others). An International Legislative Overview.” Michael J. Pollock, Director General of Spectrum Gaming Group spoke of recent experiences of iGaming regulators in regulated jurisdictions around the world.

The afternoon opened with a key discussion on lotteries titled, “Lotteries Of Today: How Lotteries Are Preparing To Face A Growing And More Competitive Market Through The Utilization Of New Technology And The Professionalization Of Their Operations.” Leading the discussion was GLI’s Lottery Services Manager Robert Lavin, from GLI’s Canada-based lottery group.

Then Nidia E. Martini, President, Mendoza Lottery, Argentina; María Julieta Cahe, Adviser to the IPLyC’s President and Coordinator of the Prevention Program and Assistance to the Problem Gambling; and  Mike Randall, Accredited Auditor by the World Lottery Association (WLA) for Responsible Gambling, GLI were panelists for the discussion “How Regulators Address Responsible Gambling.”

Sports betting is a growing area throughout the Region and GLI’s Senior Director Global Engineering and Client Services Ian Hughes presented the topic “Sports Betting Is One Of The Available Products In The Gaming And Lottery Industry Available Via Interactive Gaming Systems (iGaming, Mobile Technology, Among Others). Risks, Differences With A Live Environment.”

The Roundtable ended with a peer-to-peer discussion “Regulators Panel: Relation Of Achievements And Major Difficulties In Its Way To Regulate And To Control The Gaming Industry.” Leading the discussion were Manuel San Roman Benavente, Director, General Direction of Casinos and Slot Machines (DGJCMT) Director, Peru, Alejandro Martinez, General Director of Games of Chance of SEGOB, Mexico, and Manolo T. Castillo Solana, Administrator of Federal Fiscal Audit from the Tax Administration Services (SAT) of Mexico.

Throughout the day, GLI demonstrated its exclusive GLIAccess and GLI Mobile tools. GLI has been at the forefront of gaming regulation throughout Latin America and the Caribbean for more than 14 years. GLI’s Roundtable is part of the company’s GLI University, an exclusive program that offers continuing education and vital training to regulators around the world. GLI produces Roundtable events around the globe each year. The next events take place in February in Las Vegas and in May 2013 in Barcelona.
