MPs from center-right ruling party GERB argued that the step would encourage organizers of remote gambling to seek a license in Bulgaria. The gaming industry and the opposition voiced strong opposition to the two different tax rates.
GERB MPs eventually changed their mind to a tax rate of 15% on online gambling, saying that even a rate of 7% would not make online game operators opt for a license in Bulgaria.
The universal 15% tax rate was adopted by Parliament on Thursday without any debates.
The filtering of unlicensed gambling website is expected to start in March 2013.
