(Spain). - The expected arrival of Eurovegas to Madrid threatens the survival of Ifema exhibition center. The main source of income of Sheldon Adelson’s company are slot machines and casinos at his hotels. But in order to attract tourists to the facilities, Las Vegas Sands needs an additional offer: the organization of conferences and conventions.

Precisely, this is Ifema main activity, which organizes 250 business meetings a year, according to its latest balance. Ifema consortium (formed by the Community, Madrid City Council, the Chamber of Commerce and Bankia) has found this "overlapping activities between Eurovegas and IFEMA" and is currently conducting "studies to see how can the two entities, which are engaged in a similar activity, coexist in the same territory," explained a spokesman for the Ministry of Economy.

The Counselor Enrique Ossorio hinted that "negotiations had started" to see how Eurovegas and IFEMA would coexist. In fact, Adelson would be interested in keeping Ifema management. However, sources from Economy said "if any of such negotiations exist, they would be held at an internal level, and they would never be led by the Community, as we cannot take unilateral decisions."

Annual benefit of 45.25 million euros
Ifema is one of the few regional public-private consortiums that are profitable: in 2010 (latest report issued by the entity), it achieved final profits of 45.25 million euros.

Moreover, its financial report shows accounts with "zero debt." Every year, Ifema organizes 250 conferences and 80 exhibitions in its pavilions of Campo de las Naciones, including FITUR (tourism), SIMA (real estate) and Arco (art).
