Springfield's City Council president, James Ferrara, confirmed with 22News that MGM is in fact interested in building a resort style casino in the city's South End. Company officials said they have options to purchase all properties affected by their proposal.
Ferrara said execs from MGM came to Springfield last week, to meet with him and discuss this proposal. Apparently, MGM has already drafted plans for a casino site at Main Street between State and Union Streets; and casino executives said they have options to buy up all the properties covered in that area.
Some residents 22News spoke to said this is something they believe will help bring life to the downtown.
"I I think it's going to bring a lot of new people in here and it's going to give us a lot of opportunities", said Gloryvee Verges of Springfield. Jose Delgado put it in simple terms: "Bring the money bring the jobs, that's good for people."
But not everyone's on board. A recent anti-casino protest drew hundreds to city hall.
MGM previously expressed interest in Brimfield, but withdrew those plans due to traffic and residential concerns.
22News asked Springfield City Council President Ferrera what would happen to the landmark businesses in that area, that are rebuilding or have already rebuilt since the June 1st tornado. He said the local business impact would have to be discussed in negotiations between the winning developer and the city.
