(Fiji).- Fiji's first ever casino will be one of the biggest revenue earners for the country. The groundbreaking ceremony has been held for the construction of Fiji’s casino and convention centre on Denarau near Nadi.

The event was addressed by the interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who said it’s his government priority to provide for the prosperity for the nation and to build livelihoods. He added that the us$ 290 million dollar investment will diversify Fiji's tourism industry and pointed that Denarau Island will now have the capacity to host large conventions and events, welcoming a more dynamic range of entertainment and activity.

The casino, hotel and convention center will be built in a partnership with the US company, One Hundred Sands, and is scheduled to open in October next year. The construction will employ 900 people. Once built, the casino is expected to offer 700 jobs. The casino company has said it hopes the proceeds will provide higher education for young people.
