Local residents won’t be allowed at Goa's off-shore casinos
Talking to news persons after presenting the Goa budget 2012-13, Parrikar said the reduction in entry fee of casinos will be compensated by way of imposition of a very high licence fee on the casinos.
Asked how his government will restrict entry of Goans to the casinos, the chief minister said that passes will be issued by the district Collector. He however, said that rich locals may be allowed entry.
History of off-shore casinos has been controversial in Goa. Since one off-shore vesel was first permitted in the waters of Mandovi river in 1999, Goa has seen six more vessels given persmisison by the Congress government in 2006.
Since then, there have been protests to cancel licences of off-shore casinos and to shift them elsewhere. During the height of the agition, Parrikar as opposition leader had demanded scrapping of the off-shore casinos.
Digambar Kamat government had increased the entry fee to us$ 38.2 from us$ 9.55 and had tried to shift the vessels to Panaji outer harbour which the casinos operators challenged the high court.
