Italy was one of the first major European countries to officially legalize and regulate online poker, casino and slots, although it initially only allowed tournament poker. However, in July 2011 the country introduced laws which allow Italians to play real-money poker online for the first time.
According to H2 Capital, Italy surpassed the UK statistically for online poker in 2010, after the UK had led the continent until the previous year. It predicted that with the continued liberalization of Italy's online gambling, Italian online poker would show substantial year-on-year growth into the year 2014.
