(US).- Mississippi's casinos rose 2.6 % from a year ago, only the second time in the last year that revenues have improved at the state's 30 gambling halls. The month was aided by the leap year's extra day, as well as Mardi Gras occurring in the month, instead of in March as it did in 2011.

Overall, casinos won us$ 214.1 million, compared with us$ 208.6 million in February 2011. The 11 casinos in the Gulf Coast market saw revenue rise 5.1 percent, to us$ 98.4 million from us$ 93.6 million. The 19 casinos along the Mississippi River saw revenues rise 0.6 percent, to us$ 115.7 million from us$ 115.1 million.

February is traditionally one of the strongest months for Mississippi casinos. The state's gambling halls have struggled to regain momentum after the recession.
