(US).- The newly re-elected Democrat governor for the southern US state of Kentucky, Steve Beshear, has announced that he plans to introduce a ‘simple’ constitutional amendment to permit the operation of up to nine casinos.

Beshear was sworn into office for a second four-year term early last month after easily winning re-election in November and has publically stated that a constitutional amendment permitting casino gambling is one of his main priorities.

According to a report from the local Courier-Journal newspaper, key State Senators are already being briefed by the Governor on plans to introduce the constitutional amendment into the legislature with Beshear revealing that he hopes to unveil his finalised proposal before the end of the month.

“The necessity of placing this issue on the ballot is obvious and I am encouraged that legislators in both parties are willing to work with me on it,” said Beshear.

State Senate Minority Leader RJ Palmer revealed that Beshear’s current draft calls for each one of the state’s eight horseracing tracks to get a casino while a ninth would be opened at ‘an unspecified location’ with no limit on the maximum number. “We have dealt with this issue for far too long,” said Palmer. “I think the people have finally said ‘Enough’s enough. We want a chance to decide it.’.”
