Last year saw Belgium put forward legislation designed to open up its online gambling market during 2012 with the subsequently approved Gambling Act permitting players to take part from this month only on ‘white-listed’ sites while the nation’s four largest Internet service providers have agreed to implement blocks on unauthorised domains.
The trio of approved sites, PokerStars.be, Partouche.be and Casino777.be, which is affiliated with the online casino at Casino770.com, are being joined by a quartet of online casinos tied to live venues and two sportsbooks.
Of those sites not named on Belgium’s approved list, PartyPoker.com and iPoker still allow players based in the European nation to take part in real-money games and have stated that the new list of permitted operators is ‘unenforceable’.
In addition, the Gambling Act has not resolved issues associated with the taxation of winnings with existing regulations ambiguous over whether cash rewards should be considered taxable income.
