Ecuadorian casino owners ask for extension of closure deadline

(Ecuador).- The owners of legal casinos in the country want that the deadline of the definite casino closure to be extended. Businessmen indicate that the government talked about a two-year deadline. However, legal casinos operating in five-star hotels will have to be definitely closed by March 9, 2012.

The Executive Decree 873, of September 9th, established a deadline for the closure of such activities in accordance to the popular referendum held last May 7. This Monday, the Casino Association released a statement in which it asked President Correa to extend the deadline in order to reach the two years of operation.

The President talked about this possibility in the Radio and TV Program Enlace Ciudadano 236 of September 3. “Legal casinos, which have set an investment according to legal regulations… we are going to talk with them so they can recoup their investment in a deadline of, could be, six months, a year, two years,” the President had affirmed.

Casinos established a budget of us$ 8 to 10 million. “Severance pay charts have been presented to the Ministry of Labour Relations, to the Superintendence of Companies”, commented a representative of the trade union. According to Gama TV, the corresponding authorities have not presented an answer so far.
