(Slovenia).- Slovenia's government rejected last week a request for a gaming concession for a shopping and entertainment centre at the Vrtojba border crossing, which had been met with distrust in the Gorisko region as a potential threat to Slovenia's biggest casino operator HIT.

The government argued that the existing gaming facilities in Gorisko were sufficient and that expanding gaming would not bring any positive results but could have a negative effect on the existing companies, the Government Communications Office said.

Alea Iacta planned to build the 70-100 million euro Sailaway complex at the border crossing with Italy, right next to HIT's casino Drive In. It is unclear whether the facility, which apart from a gaming lounge would also include a shopping centre, bowling alleys, 3D cinemas, arcade games, pool tables, a karting track, an indoor golf course, pools, restaurants and four- and five-star hotels with 150 rooms on 30,000 sq. metres, will even be built now.

The project had been dividing the Sempeter-Vrtojba city councillors, but in September they finally agreed in a secret vote to endorse Alea Iacta seeking a concession.

Alea Iacta expressed surprise at how quickly the government reached its decision. The company said it will not give up since the decision runs contrary to the national gaming strategy, the STA learnt from sources close to the company.
