(Cambodia).- The government of Cambodia expected to see 25 % rise in tax revenues from casinos this year, as the industry has mushroomed along the borders with Thailand and Vietnam, said a government official this week.

"We expect the tax revenues from the industry this year will reach 20 million U.S. dollars, up 25 percent from that of 16 million U.S. dollars last year," said Mey Vann, director of the Financial Industry Department at the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

Currently, the country has 61 casinos with a few of them being constructed. All of them are situated along the border areas and in Preah Sihanouk coastal province, except one casino, the Malaysia-owned NagaWorld, is located in the central capital of Phnom Penh.

Nguyen Dang Thin, vice president of Ha Tien Vegas Entertainment Resort in Kampot province bordering Vietnam, said Tuesday that the casino has attracted between 250 to 300 gamblers each day, most of them are Vietnamese."Our business is good; we see steady growth in customers," he said.

Cambodia licenses casino business in order to attract foreign tourists to this impoverished country. According to Cambodian law, only foreigners are allowed to play in the casinos.
