(Chile).- The initiative that seeks to allow the casino operation in international cruises that navigate on Chilean waters took a new step forward last week. The Chamber of Representatives approved, with 87 votes in favor, 2 against and 8 abstentions, the latest modifications to the project that was also approved last week by the Senate.

With the approval, it is concluded the third legislative proceeding of the initiative, so the project is ready to become law. The Ministry of Economy, Pablo Longueira, remarked that, with the approval of this project, the commitment acquired by the government to have the law in force before November 1st, 2011 is being complied.

Besides, the Undersecretaty of Tourism, Jacqueline Plass, said: “The urgency of this is explained with the anticipation on which the shipping companies detemine their itineraries. So Chile will be incorporated to the routes from 2012 and 2013”.

Representatives from the party Renovación Nacional and members of the Commission of Extreme Zones, Alberto Cardemil and Alejandro Santana, added that the initiative will be of great help to strenghten the economy in extreme zones of the country, which depend on a great extent on the tourist market of their ports. The proposal was in conditions to be issued to the government for its promulgation.
