New York Lottery Director Gordon Medenica said of the achievement, "As a nearly us$ 8 billion business that raises billions for education statewide, we take our social responsibility to our players and retailers very seriously. Achieving Level 2 Certification serves as a positive, practical step in that direction."
In 2011, the New York Lottery completed a rigorous self-assessment of its current Responsible Gaming practices required for Level 2 Certification and submitted the results to the WLA's Independent Assessment Panel (IAP) of international experts in the field of corporate responsibility. The New York Lottery will use the IAP's feedback to further enhance its evolving Responsible Gaming program with the goal of advancing to the next level of Certification.
The New York Lottery continues to be North American largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing over us$ 3 billion in fiscal year 2010-2011 to help support education in New York State. The Lottery's aid represents over 15 % of total state education funding to local school districts.
Lottery revenue is distributed to local school districts by the same statutory formula used to distribute other state aid to education. It takes into account both a school district's size and its income level; larger, lower-income school districts receive proportionately larger shares of Lottery school funding.
The World Lottery Association is an international trade organization representing 142 lotteries from 90 countries on five continents.
