Last week, with the publication in the Official Bulleting, the norm, that was sanctioned by the Congreso last June 1, came into force last week. The idea is that all the environments are “100% smoke free”, as stated Cristina Fernández, President of Argentina.

Indoor places as well as public places will have to be tobacco free. Among those places, there are casinos, bingo halls, bars, restaurants, discos and theatres. Changes also be made in sales: spare cigarettes could not be offered, and vending machines either.

Tobacco advertising is one of the key points of the law. In six months, brands could not advertise their products in the media or in the street. Besides, in a year, manufacturers will have to include images that alert the public that it is detrimental to health and change phrases such as “light” for messages like “smoking causes cancer”. For those who do not comply with the law (the Ministry of Health is in charge of the inspections), there will be economic sanctions.
