Senator Jim Whelan confirms that the documents filed with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection show that the boutique casino would be the first of two, and would be built in phases.
The casino could have as few as 200 rooms, and eventually expand to 500 within five years; however, the documents filed Monday show that the project could have up to 850 rooms. The city's most successful casinos have 2,000 or more rooms.
The Hard Rock franchise expressed interest in building one of the new smaller casinos and is the first to come forward with plans. Governor Chris Christie signed the bill into law back in January.
