Khadga Bahadur Bishwakarma, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, took the decision last Friday to cancel their licences if they fail to pay their outstanding tax liabilities and royalties within a week, nepalnews online said.
Earlier this year, the government began the process to close down some of the casinos that attracts thousands of foreign tourists, mostly Indians, after recommendations from the finance ministry for tax evasions.
Four casinos run by Nepal Recreation Centre owe the government us$ 4.2 million as royalty. Casino Royal and Casino Phoolbari also owe the government us$ 300,451 and us$ 819,411 respectively, the report said.
Even though gambling is illegal in Nepal, eight hotels in the capital and two in the popular tourist town of Pokhara run casinos under special government permits that bars local people.
