(US).- Efforts to legalise online poker in California have taken yet another turn after proposed legislation up before the western state’s legislature was redefined as an ‘urgency bill’ allowing it to proceed in the 2011 legislative cycle.

Known as Senate Bill 40 and introduced by California State Senator Louis Correa, the proposed measure would, if passed, see a number of approved website hubs authorised to operate games of poker on the Internet with the state receiving a percentage of the profits.

Correa’s measure has already been amended when provisions were inserted early last month to increase the number of possible licences that could be made available. This latest move has been designed to make sure the state does not miss out on an opportunity to generate more than us$ 1.4 billion in new revenues.

“With federal action looming and the market wide open, we have to quickly authorise online poker in California,” read a statement from Correa. “To delay will mean loss of more than us$ 1.4 billion in new state revenues at a time when it is severely needed.”

In amending Senate Bill 40, Correa is ensuring that the measure remains active and continues its journey through this year’s legislative cycle without being subject to legislative committee deadlines.
