UK: offline bingo industry is on the decline
This has resulted in slots revenue dropping a third, down to US$ 121.308 million a year. The number of bingo halls across the UK has increased quite drastically in the last 5 years from 678 to 526. In 2010, 25 bingo halls closed their doors.
Ernst & Young, a prominent accounting firm, has confirmed that many clubs are reaching the critical level of one hundred visitors a week. Any less than this, makes opening for business unfeasible.
The number of bingo players fell by 50%, down to 2.5 million in 2010. Profits were also down by 50% down to US$ 202.104 million. Paul Talboys, spokesperson for the Bingo Association, said that clubs couldn’t entice players with large jackpots because the industry attracts more tax than other forms of gambling. He also said that reducing the tax would save thousands of jobs.
