Joe Comartin, a member of the left-leaning New Democratic Party and the representative for the Windsor-Tecumseh electoral district, revealed that his proposal would delete section 207(4)(b) of the nation’s Criminal Code that prohibits provinces from permitting wagering on ‘any race or fight, or on a single sports event or athletic contest’.

“When it comes to this type of gambling, the Criminal Code is outdated and does not recognize the modern reality of professional sport leagues and sporting events,” said Comartin.

The Code currently prohibits anyone from wagering on the outcome of a single sporting event but Comartin stated that his measure “recognizes the reality that betting goes on and enables provinces to better regulate gambling and allow communities, not organized crime, to benefit from the proceeds of gaming”.

“Sports gambling is a multi-million dollar industry that operates underground and unregulated throughout Canada. This bill will help take a large chunk of revenues out of the hands of organized crime,” said Comartin.
