Macau visitors top 10.3 million in first five months of the year

(Macau).- In the first five months of 2010, Macau received 10.33 million visitors, which is a rise of 15.8 % compared to the same period last year, Macau’s Statistics and Census Bureau said last week.

Visitor arrivals totalled 10,325,051 and the majority of visitors were from mainland China (5,522,415); Hong Kong (3,011,058); Taiwan (545,949); Japan (169,149); Malaysia (145,786) and Republic of Korea (133,762). Same-day visitors accounted for 52 % of the total visitor arrivals, at 5,364,492.

In the same period, the number of visitors from China rose 24.2 % whilst those from Hong Kong rose by 6.2 %. Asia accounted for 97.3 % of the total visitors to Macau.

Analysed by mode of transport, visitor arrivals by sea totalled 4,252,348, up by 16.8 % year-on-year. Visitors arriving at the Outer Harbour increased by 8.3 % to 2,689,811, with the majority coming from Hong Kong (51.5 %) and mainland China (24.8 %); meanwhile, those arriving at the Provisional Ferry Terminal in Taipa went up by 36.5 % to 1,407,488.

Arrivals by land increased by 16 % year-on-year to 5,366,185. Those arriving through the Border Gate totalled 4,911,916 and the majority were visitors from mainland China (78.8 %) and Hong Kong (13.9 %).

Visitor arrivals by air rose by 9.6 % year-on-year to 706,518 and people arriving at the Macau International Airport went up by 10.2 % to 697,827, with the majority coming from Taiwan (36.4 %); mainland China (29.6 %) and Malaysia (8.1 %).

In May alone, the number of visitor and non-resident arrivals totalled 2,620,223. Total visitor arrivals surged by 31.8 % year-on-year to 2,098,267 as visitor arrivals for May 2009 was adversely affected by the human swine influenza pandemic, DSEC stressed. Same-day visitors accounted for 52.8 % (1,107,475) of the total visitor arrivals, with 601,908 coming from mainland China.
