Online casinos considered by Manitoba, Canada
Steve Ashton, the lotteries minister for Manitoba, announced this week that the province is considering following the example of British Columbia and establishing itself as an online gambling operator. Lawmakers called for extensive study into the possible benefits and costs of offering online casino games to Manitoba residents.
Both British Columbia and Nova Scotia have online gambling lottery sites. Quebec also has plans to enter the Internet gambling market this fall.
Proponents point out that Internet gaming exists, whether Canada regulates it or not. They say that refusing to legalize and tax online casinos doesn't affect social costs, while giving up the revenue benefits generated by having the province run the operation. "We're looking at it," says Ashton. "No decision has been made yet, but I anticipate a decision sometime over the next few months."
Ashton added that thousands of residents are already involved in online gambling, and asserted that he believes those people would prefer to play at regulated sites.
