The development will provide 11 new private gaming salons, an expansion and upgrade of the VIP Mahogany Room, improved spa facilities, and a refurbishment of the Crown Towers villas.

The Mahogany Room will be expanded by almost 50 % and include new non-gaming facilities for members, Crown said in a statement on Thursday, prior to a presentation of the development to the media. The expansion and upgrade will take place over the next 18 months.

The entire project is to be completed in the first half of 2012. The expansion follows amendments to Crown Melbourne's licence, negotiated with the Victorian state government. The new licence, ratified by the Victorian parliament in 2009, allowed for more gaming tables and a higher tax on gaming machines.

Executive chairman of Crown Ltd, James Packer, said the upgrade would consolidate Crown Melbourne's leadership in the global premium player market."On completion, our premium facilities will... allow Crown Melbourne to compete successfully in this very competitive sector of the global tourism market."

The new premium facilities will complement a refurbishment of Crown's main gaming floor.
