The Guinness World Record attempt tournament had a buy-in of only us$ 1 with a us$ 300,000 guaranteed prize pool and is the third time in twelve months that PokerStars has broken the record. The tournament was finished in less than six hours with the first prize of us$ 50,000 awarded to the winner and a further 30,000 players also cashing in during the event.
The December record follows the company’s most recent success in July 2009 when it set the record for the largest ever online poker tournament with 65,000 players from 155 countries taking part. Prior to that, the world record for the largest online poker tournament was set by PokerStars in December 2008 when 35,000 players took part in a special us$ 11 buy-in event.
According to figures from the online poker tracking site PokerScout, PokerStars is currently the top ranked poker network in the world, ahead of rival Full Tilt Poker.
