South Africa: Board calls for casino licence applications

(South Africa).- The Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board (ECGBB) has called for applications for a casino licence in Zone 2 of the province. The current licence – held by Hemingways Casino – expires on September 25, 2011.

Zone 2 comprises the magisterial districts of Alice; Butterworth/Gcuwa; East London; Dutywa; Centane; King William’s Town; Komgha; Mdantsane; Middledrift; Ngqamakwe; Peddie/Ngqushwa; Sterkstrom; Seymour; Stutterheim; Tsomo; Victoria East; Willowvale; and Zwelitsha.

A draft Request for Proposal (RFP) was be issued yesterday and may be obtained from the offices of the ECGBB in Quenera Drive in Beacon Bay at a fee of us$ 130.

A bidders’ conference will be held at the ECGBB offices on January 21st. After this, a final RFP will be issued. The proposed closing date for applications, subject to amendment after the bidders’ conference and final RFP, is on Friday, May 7, 2010.

“The province’s existing casinos have, amongst other benefits, brought much-needed infrastructural development and created sustainable employment,” ECGBB’s chief executive officer Mabutho Zwane said .

Zwane added that the board had also proposed that applicants should boast hotel and restaurant facilities, and that there must be shareholding by Eastern Cape-based empowerment shareholders.
