First betting shops opened in Spanish Basque region
Ekasa, a joint venture between a group of Basque gaming companies, was the first to open its doors to the public Thursday in Bilbao. Last Saturday, Kiroljokoa followed suit with the opening of shops in the Basque towns of Eibar and Vitoria.
The third of the group of three companies licensed to open betting shops in the Basque region, and the only one to miss the start of the football season is Victoria Garaipen, a subsidiary of Victoria Apuestas S.A. which is the joint venture between William Hill and Codere.
The company is currently awaiting approval from the Basque government’s Gaming Department for their computer system and betting terminals. Victoria Garaipen hopes to open its first betting shops in the region by November. Each of the licensees is allowed to open 25 betting shops with a maximum of 500 terminals.
The gaming sector in the Basque region is estimated to be worth approximately 700 million euros. According to the 2007 Annual Report on Gaming from the Spanish Ministry of Interior, Basque residents spent on average over 660 euros per person on gambling.
