Real Madrid to find a new sponsor
The European Court of Justice (ECJ ) ruled that a Portuguese law giving state-run charity La Santa Casa de Misericordia (SCM) a monopoly on betting and lottery games is legal if it is designed to combat fraud and other crimes. In its ruling the Court considers that the prohibition imposed by Portuguese legislation on gaming operators such as Bwin of offering internet gambling may be regarded as compatible with the freedom to provide services.
Real Madrid has reasons to worry. The case against Bwin and the Portuguese football league allows Portugal to extend gambling monopoly to the internet and may open the doors to other European members to do the same.
Manchester United and Bayern Munich had denounced this agreement because they considered it's state aid. Similar problems could occur in future. Real Madrid is contacting to financial institutions to find stable sponsor. In this sense, sources close to the institution confirm meetings with Grupo Santander.
