AAMS gave no comparative figure but June 2008 wagers were 3.968 billion euros, according to the Agipro news agency. In June 2009, scratch card wagers were 736 million euros, the Lotto game accounted for 492 million, sports betting totalled 197 million and online poker pulled in 189 million.

Gaming has remained broadly resilient in the economic downturn with Italian gambling company Lottomatica SpA posting higher first-quarter results year on year. Two thirds of the rise Lottomatica expects in full-year earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization will come from its Italian activities, it has said. It holds the concessions for Italian Lotto game and Gratta & Vinci scratch cards and is also active in sports betting and online poker.

Rival SNAI SpA has sports betting operations and says it runs Italy's largest horserace betting network. At 1455 GMT, Lottomatica shares were up 3.98 % to 14.11 euros and Snia up 0.54 % to 2.815 euros. Milan's FTSE MIB index was up 3.11 % to 19,024 points.
