Penghu islands to vote in casino referendum
(Taiwan).- The residents of Penghu will vote later this year on whether the islands should host a new casino. That’s following the repeal of a law banning such gambling facilities.

The Penghu archipelago lies off the western coast of the main island of Taiwan. It is often used as a test area for policies which eventually make it to the main island.
The ruling Kuomintang (KMT), pushed a bill through the legislature on January 12 to lift the decades-long ban on casinos. The bill allows offshore islands to build casinos only if they are approved by residents in referenda.
Hung Tung-lin, director of the Penghu Tourism Department, says the voting date for the outlying archipelago’s 90,000-strong population has been tentatively set for June.
Hung told AFP, "We held 13 polls in the past of which nine favored setting up casinos but it’s hard to predict the outcome of the referendum."
