According to an article in the Antigua Sun newspaper, Cort met with United States Trade Relations (USTR) representatives regarding Internet gaming negotiations along with ‘high-ranking officials of the Justice Department’ in a last attempt to find an amicable resolution to the matter.
The Minister stated that his journey was an effort to see if discussions could be finalized so that, subsequently, an agreement could be reached during the course of this week. “We’ve been holding discussions and negotiations over many months,” said Cort. “I believe that we’ve reached a point where we might be able to conclude these negotiations.”
However, Cort revealed that the matter would be brought before the administration of President-Elect Barack Obama if an agreement were not reached this week. “If there is no resolution, then it means that the matter will go over into a new administration under the Presidency of Barack Obama,” said Cort.
“These discussions would have been held over all of these months under a Republican administration and if we go into a new administration it will be new players. We will virtually need to start from scratch.”
