Devine left in mid-May by mutual consent after helping to transform the firm’s IT department from that of a growing start-up to one powering the world’s biggest online betting community.

Betfair revealed that McAlister would be in charge of a global engineering team of 300 people from January 19 responsible for enhancing customer experience, driving innovation and underpinning profitable growth.

“We are delighted to welcome such an experienced and capable Chief Technology Officer to Betfair,” said David Yu, Chief Executive Officer for Betfair. “I have no doubt that he is the right person to lead our technology strategy, innovation and delivery into the next chapter of our corporate development.”

Betfair stated that McAlister is a respected industry veteran with more than 25 years of experience in running global IT operations for leading corporations. He served as Chief Technology Officer for Vodafone in London between 2001 and 2005 before moving to the United States to take the same role for Motricity in North Carolina.

“Betfair has demonstrated its ability to turn technology into a strategic business advantage,” said McAlister. “I look forward to building on this success in my new role working with a talented global team.”
