The gaming cooperation, one of European market leaders, blames the worsening business climate for the downturn, dropping 19 per cent in takings compared with the same period last year.

From January to June, Casinos Austria earned 107.5 million euros, about 10 million euros less than in the same period in 2007.

The company, which employs more than 13,000 people worldwide, claims the smoking ban and soaring fuel prices are also negative factors.

Nevertheless, the company, which runs 12 casinos in Austria, is optimistic of matching last year's result as a whole given the growth in its lottery branch.
