Slovakia: Casinos look for bigger market share
This growth has been enough to attract another company to the market. In June, Olympic Entertainment Slovakia opened its first casino in Bratislava, and it will not be the last.
Olympic is also looking to expand into other Slovak towns. The biggest Slovak operator of casinos, Casinos Slovakia, is also planning an expansion. It is not only the amount spent that raises the interest of these companies but also the fact that it is growing fast.
Four years ago, people spent about 770 million euros on gambling. Last year it was twice as much. Over the last two years growth was the highest. The year-on-year increase was up to 25%. Casinos represent a relative small portion of this business - only around 4%. And gamblers spent 54 million euros here last year. Compared to 2005 this is an increase by 20%.
The most popular forms of gambling in Slovakia are slot machines and electronic roulettes. They bring in more than 50 percent of the income. They can also been found in casinos but most people play them elsewhere.
