But the relationship is more wide-reaching and speaks to new opportunities for Cisco, as well as new experiences for casino guests in the future.

Cisco will be collaborating with Harrah’s, providing the gaming company with a first look at its latest technology in an attempt to innovate together. Harrah’s will use Cisco technology to upgrade its customer experience, in an attempt to stay at the leading edge of the gaming industry.

In the near term, Harrah’s will look at establishing virtual concierge desks using its high-definition video conferencing equipment Telepresence. For example, a guest who speaks Chinese might be seen getting concierge services in Chinese through Telepresence.

Cisco also is looking at implementing digital signs that interact with users using their loyalty cards or RFID tags. The networked video signs could offer up suggestions for entertainment or dining based on the customer’s past stays at the hotel. Guests might also get location-based offers from stores and shops at the hotel right on their cell phone as they pass by. In the future, Cisco is looking at taking some of the video imaging to the next level with holographic projections.

This is all on top of the basic but lucrative work of upgrading Harrah’s video networks, in what Cisco says ultimately will be the largest IP networking based security implementation in the gaming and entertainment world. That, too, can help guests by alerting the casino when there’s a line at a table or check-in station so more employees can be dispatched.

"Harrah’s is focused on harnessing new capabilities to transform customer experiences in ways never before seen and in so doing, enabling Harrah’s to remain an industry leader in customer service," said Howard Lock, director, transportation and hospitality for Cisco IBSG.

The deal, which eventually will cover 31 Harrah’s properties worldwide, is a big win for Cisco. It signals a huge opportunity for the company, which is hoping to help many of the other casinos make the long awaited shift to IP video surveillance networks.
