Mathias Hedlund, Head of Internet, Telephone and Retail Betting for Svenska Spel, has left as the gaming operator prepares to implement a new strategy to encourage more responsible gambling practices. Hedlund told Sweden’s E24 news service that this change in direction had resulted in increased political involvement in the company. He stated that there was now a risk that the operation may no longer be able to develop at the same rate as the rest of the market.
“What is happening in Svenska Spel is a change in ambition,” said Hedlund. “I personally would like to develop the company to be competitive while at the same time maintaining our social responsibility. But with the new direction, I am not the right person for the job.”
In addition, Annica Axelsson, Head of the Bingo, Casino and Restaurants Division for Svenska Spel, has also resigned following the appointment of Margareta Winberg, a former Deputy Prime Minister, as Chairman of the company.
Winberg stated that Svenska Spel would now do more to deter people from gambling and criticized the approach taken under the leadership of Karrbrink, which she stated promoted new products and encouraged people to gamble.
