PokerStars.com had already seen over 19,900 concurrent players on two occasions the week before, beating the previous record of 16,960 set by leading poker site PartyPoker.com in 2006.
The subsequent passage of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), legislation that was designed to curb online gambling in the US by banning financial transactions, saw PartyPoker.com exit the American market along with other publicly traded firms.
However, the legislation has seen PokerStars.com and competitor FullTiltPoker.com catapulted to the top spots for online poker. In the year since the law was passed, both privately held poker sites have more than doubled in size.
