Mayor Savvas Vergas told police that he was very concerned by reports that businesses had allowed customers to play on illegal online betting sites and asked them to investigate.

"In the last few months, 22 illegal internet cafes have been discovered close to schools," Vergas said. "We have information and complaints that illegal games are being played there."

He continued by saying that the Paphos Municipality would also be conducting its own investigation to determine whether or not the shops and cafes in question have the necessary permits to operate.
