Statements by Tarso Genro, Minister of Justice

Brazil: "National Congress has to regulate bingos in the country"

(Brazil).- The Minister of Justice, Tarso Genro, said that bingos should be banned if they continue being “synonymous of illegality and irregularity”. Genro said that the debate on the subject is responsibility of the National Congress.

“I think that the discussion shall be made by the National Congress. I do not have a

strict position on the matter. As long as bingo is synonymous, as it has been right now, of illegality and irregularities, it seems that the correct measure is not to allow them to work”, said, after participating on the meeting of the Social and Economic Development Council (CDES), in the government house.

More than ten thousand bingo workers protested last Wednesday, in Brazilia, to ask for the bingo legalization. The president of the House of Legislators, Arlindo Chinaglia, affirmed that it will discuss the issue with the leaders of the house.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also asked a definition of the legislators on the bingo regulation, in order to avoid, in his opinion, “the industry of the appeals for protection”, granted by the Justice to authorize temporarily the bingo operation as long as there is not a definite decision.
