Cambodian casinos cope with temporary close-down

Donaco’s casino Star Vegas ceased its operations until further notice to prevent the outbreak of Covid-19 following a surge in cases.

In the Banteay Meanchey province, all casino operations have been temporarily suspended from 27 April 2021 to comply with the order from Cambodian local authorities to temporarily close all casinos in the area, Donaco announced.

The company said it will monitor developments and advise the market once there is a further update, the company emphasized that the health and safety of the staff and guests remain the priority.

Provincial governor Oum Reatry ordered the lockdown of all casinos in the region in Phnom Penh, Ta Khmau city, and Preah Sihanouk city.

The Star reported: “The casino business in Banteay Meanchey province is temporarily closed until further notice.” The suspension of the casino business came after an outbreak of Covid-19 cases from casino players was detected.

Provincial Administration Director and Spokesman Chhoeun Kraiyong said: “Seeing the outbreak, the provincial administration decided to suspend all casinos in Poipet town. We wouldn’t have closed them if it wasn’t related.” The casino where the cases were detected was not named.

Cambodia’s capital city, Phnom Penh, extended its night-time curfew until 5 May. The curfew was first introduced on 1 April and has been extended since then. NagaWorld casino resort is located in the capital and has paused its operations since March after several employees tested positive for Covid-19.
