The UKGC suspects that Moplay's parent company has breached a condition of its remote operating licence, which includes Real Event and Virtual Betting Casino. The suspension does not prevent the operator from returning any outstanding balances to customers. Gibraltar Government said the firm has not received the financial support it was projected to receive when first licensed.

The UK Gambling Commission has followed the lead of Gibraltar’s Gambling Licensing Authority in suspending operator Addison Global’s licence, the parent company behind online gambling operator Moplay. It is the second gaming license suspended in the UK in a week following Triplebet's Matchbook.

Addison Global holds a “Combined Remote Operating Licence – Real Event and Virtual Betting Casino”, which is now being reviewed by the UKGC.

The British regulator announced Thursday in a statement that it has started a review under section 116 of the Gambling Act 2005 and, under section 118 of the Act, have decided to suspend that company’s operating licence while that review takes place.

“We have decided to commence a review because we suspect that Addison Global Limited has breached a condition of the licence (section 120(1)(b) and is unsuitable to carry on the licensed activities (section 120(1)(d) of the Act). We consider it appropriate to suspend the licence with immediate effect pending the conclusion of the review,” the UKGC explained.

The license suspension makes it illegal for Addison Global Limited to offer gambling services via its moplay.co.uk website in Britain but does not prevent the operator from returning any outstanding balances to customers. In accordance with section 118(4)(c) of the Act, the Licensee is authorised to settle any outstanding winning bets that it has accepted in reliance of the above operating licences and return any outstanding balances to customers.

The UKGC also informed Addison Global Limited that they “expect clear messaging to consumers regarding their accounts.”

In Gibraltar, the Gambling Commissioner has been working with Addison Global executives on restructuring proposals put forward by the shareholder of the company, who at all times have assured the Gambling Commissioner and Government of their intention to support the business and its further development. These proposals, which included honouring all outstanding liabilities, have not materialised and the Gambling Commissioner said it is no longer able to accept that the firm is able to meet its licensing conditions.

A Gibraltar Government statement concluded: “It is most disappointing that the promised financial support from the shareholder has failed to materialise as the firm has not received the financial support it was projected to receive when first licensed. Whilst the Directors will have to address the solvency issues, a decision has been made to suspend the relevant licences to protect consumers from any further detriment.”
