ncore Boston Harbor, Everett's USD 2.6 billion resort casino, is set to have its grand opening on Sunday. The first resort casino in the Greater Boston area, owned by Wynn Resorts, is scheduled to open at 10 a.m., and crews were still working on landscaping projects and small construction jobs on Broadway.
On Wednesday, Encore Boston Harbor President Bob DeSalvio detailed the transportation and safety plan for Sunday's grand opening, along with Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria and Everett Police Chief Steven Mazzie. Casino officials are preparing for thousands of people to flock to the casino.
On its busiest days, the casino operators expect about 50,000 people at Encore. Peak times are anticipated to be Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays. "Would I expect there to be 25,000 people here on Sunday? Absolutely," said Warren Richards, the casino's executive director of food and beverage, WCVB Channel 5 reports. "Will we be ready for 50,000 people? Absolutely, and we're even preparing for more than that."
Meanwhile, plans for parking and transportation to and from Encore Boston Harbor are being closely watched by surrounding towns and cities. Visitors are asked not to drive to Encore Boston Harbor on Sunday as the newest casino in Massachusetts opens for business. Local leaders have been promoting alternate transportation to the casino because, with only 3,000 available parking spots, the odds will be against those who are looking to drive. Harbor shuttle buses are already running by the casino to and from the Wellington and Malden Center MBTA stations on the Orange Line. Other transportation options include water shuttles and Bluebikes.
A three-day VIP preview period began Monday night on the casino floor and in the resort's bars, restaurants and lounges. Also, Encore Boston Harbor will host its first Championship Pro Boxing event on July 12.
Mayor Carlo DeMaria said 25 Everett police officers will be working to direct traffic along with dozens of other officers from State Police and surrounding towns. “I’m confident we have the resources we need in place,” said DeMaria.
Encore Boston Harbor sits on 33 acres along the Mystic River and outer Boston Harbor, with a five-star luxury tower overlooking the water and Boston skyline. Its gaming floor will feature more than 4,000 gaming positions 6-acre, four-season public harborwalk and an open park.
