Exclusive interview with Germán Segura, BetPlay Director

"Corredor Empresarial intends to cover 50% of the Colombian online gambling market"

BetPlay manager Germán Segura mentioned two points that remain to be improved: the bankization and the fight against illegal gambling.

In a conversation with Yogonet, Germán Segura anticipates what the next steps of the company are.

In September 2017, Corredor Empresarial became the second company to obtain permission from Coljuegos to operate online gaming. One year after this fact, Yogonet.com interviewed Germán Segura, manager of BetPlay, brand chosen by the company to exploit this new authorized game modality, who reviewed the evolution of the market that today has 16 legal sites.

"Last year, we dedicated ourselves to training the sales network we have throughout the country - remember that the license enables both the online exploitation of sports betting and its marketing in points of sale - and this 2018 we officially launched the page. We invested heavily in advertising in order to reach all Colombians and we had results: in January, we had 100,000 registered customers, and today we have 623,000. More than 150,000 active people play monthly. We were projecting about USD 250,000 in sales, but now we estimate that we will close 2018 with USD 300,000. The market has learned, new competitors have entered and, despite this, it continues to grow, "Segura explained.

Among all the operators, it is estimated that in July the sale of online sports bets reached 188,000 million pesos (equivalent to USD 59 million, approximately) and now the figure would be around 222,000 million pesos (more than USD 69 million), according to unofficial data. The manager of BetPlay was positive to point out that they expect that - quickly - all authorized pages reach 500,000 million pesos (USD 156,955,000) per month. With these numbers in mind, Corredor Empresarial intends to cover 50% of the Colombian online gaming market, during the second year of BetPlay operation.

Prior to his incursion into online gambling, Corredor Empresarial was already a recognized company in Colombia thanks to the operation of localized and novel games, such as the super star and Las Deportivas. Therefore, they have the possibility of distributing BetPlay's offer, in the retail channel, through its 28 associated companies. "This is a great strength for us: we are not talking about simple marketers, but they are part of the Corredor Empresarial family. Therefore, they are committed to the success of the product, "Segura said.

At this time, the site offers sports bets, slots and roulette. R. Franco Digital and Microgaming are your content providers. But they are working to incorporate games from brands such as Patagonia Entertainment and Greentube, among others. The idea is to add to the catalog blackjack and other forms of tables.

"This is our goal as far as content is concerned. As I mentioned, the main objective is to cover 50% of the market; the second is to monitor the evolution of the market as new competitors join; and we also intend to multiply our advertising efforts so that Colombia identifies us as the number one betting house, "he said.

Tennis is interesting for Colombian gamblers, followed by basketball and baseball. But the most representative will always be football ", this statement by Segura, together with the declared intention to increase advertising investment, allows us to glimpse that in 2019 there could be some sponsorship agreement or similar with a football club.

Regarding the work of the regulating entity, Coljuegos, the manager of the online platform of Corredor Empresarial indicated two points to improve: the difficulty of the companies in the gaming industry to become banked and the fight against illegal gambling, for which he requested a greater rigor.

Next week, BetPlay will provide a workshop at GOL Expo Colombia. The agenda of events for 2019 is not yet confirmed.
