Senator Richard Gordon on Thursday proposed the creation of a new regulatory body for online gambling, leaving the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) to oversee land-based casinos.

The Philippine Online Gaming and Regulatory Authority (POGRA) will be better equipped to oversee the $250-billion industry using new technology, said Gordon.

Gordon spoke at a Senate hearing on an alleged bribe attempt from Chinese casino tycoon Jack Lam. Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre said a dedicated online gambling regulator would help eliminate gray areas.

Online games are limited to offshore players, because Philippine gambling laws prohibit Filipinos from gambling through the Internet.
