he target commissioning date had been set for the end of 2016, but was put off for end 2017 due a number of factors including delays in reclamation and labor shortages. The project began in 2009.
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is a dual three-lane carriageway. The main bridge stretches from the artificial island off Gongbei in Zhuhai to the eastern artificial island for the tunnel section just west of the Hong Kong boundary.
Cheung inspected the Hong Kong boundary crossing facilities and the Hong Kong link road on Thursday.
"At the moment, whether the main bridge on mainland waters or the Hong Kong side works, as well as the Macau (and) Zhuhai side works, the objective is to complete the works by the end of this year. That is the current objective among the various sides,'' he said.
The commissioning date has yet to be determined, he said. "It all depends on the progress of works.''
He said all the arrangements for cross-boundary traffic needs to be finalized. "So the actual date of commissioning will eventually be determined by the three governments with the guidance of the central task force on the bridge.''
The final steel bridge tower out of seven bridged towers in the main bridge project was erected on June 2, last year.
