The South Korean government is planning much stronger penalties for illegal online gambling operators both working within the country and offshore.

ccording to the National Police Agency (NPA) online gambling in South Korea is becoming a major problem as more and more Koreans gamble online which is a crime in the country along with nationals visiting casinos.

Tot his plans are being drawn up to increase the penalties for those caught, currently the punishment for operating an illegal online website in the country are a maximum of 7 years in prison and a fine of up to $62,000.

Under the new laws running an online gambling website will be classed as participating in a criminal group enterprise with a maximum sentence of life in prison.

“With the charge of criminal group organization, the operators will be subject to harsher punishments of up to life sentences,” a NPA official told the Korean Times.

Online gambling is seen as a major problem now in South Korea as Citizens are largely prohibited from partaking in any sort of gambling.
